Endorses Tang,

The race

This school board election is on the November 3, 2026 general-election ballot in Orchard School District (San José, Santa Clara County). Three at-large seats are at stake; five candidates qualified, per the Registrar: Lyseria Evelyn Phillips; Renee Lo; Katherine Kasolas-Jacobson; Jeff Tang; Molly Eslao. Voters may vote for up to three.

One roster fact changes the arithmetic of this race and voters deserve it stated plainly: Renee Lo, an incumbent elected in 2022 who served as board president, vice president and clerk, has died. Her published obituary (Legacy.com, 2026) records her Orchard board service and her years of PTA, Scouting and special-education advisory volunteering. The Silicon Valley DSA guide likewise notes "the very recent and tragic loss of incumbent board member Lo." Her name remains on the Registrar's qualified list and, on the sources available to us, on the ballot — but she cannot serve. In practical terms, four living candidates are competing for three seats, and a vote cast for a full slate that includes her is a vote for a vacancy and a later appointment process.

The candidates

Renee Lo — incumbent (deceased). Both columns of her file, for the record: Credit — elected in 2022; served as president, vice president and clerk of this board; four years on the Santa Clara County School Boards Association's governing board, including as vice president of programming; a decade of Scouting volunteering and service on the Southeast SELPA Community Advisory Committee, per her obituary. There is no dirt column to write for a candidate who has died in the year of the election; there is only the fact that the seat she sought cannot be filled by her.

Lyseria Evelyn Phillips. The DSA guide describes her as "a staunch union member firmly in favor of teacher's protections and community building," and IBEW Local 332's voter guide endorses her — she is the only Orchard candidate in labor's published guide. Credit: a documented stance and organized backing. Con, on this page's doctrine: her documented posture is union advocacy; no positions on curriculum, budgets, or school choice were found. Dirt: none found.

Katherine Kasolas-Jacobson. A documented structural fact: her husband, Karl Raymond Jacobson, is a sitting trustee of this same district (current term 2025–2028, per GoodParty's officeholder listing), so her election would place a married couple in two of the board's five seats. The DSA guide goes further, claiming the couple "dominated board meetings enough to trigger the resignation of the district's superintendent in 2017." That 2017 claim appears in the DSA guide only; we could not independently verify it in this pass, and it is unproven — we do not price it. The two-seats-one-household fact needs no verification beyond the two rosters, and it is enough on its own: board oversight of a superintendent, a budget, and each other's votes should not run through one household.

Jeff Tang. No individual platform, questionnaire, or news profile was found. The DSA guide "gently recommends" him for one of the remaining seats in the wake of Lo's death. First-time candidate on the record available — unproven, not a demerit.

Molly Eslao. Same file as Tang: no individual platform found; the DSA guide gently recommends her for a remaining seat. Unproven, not a demerit.

Pros and cons

Record gaps

Searches run, by exact name plus district: the Registrar's qualified list (roster); Lo's published obituary (her service record and death); IBEW Local 332's voter guide (Phillips endorsed; no other Orchard candidate listed); the Silicon Valley DSA guide's Orchard section (Phillips, Kasolas-Jacobson, Tang and Eslao commentary — its 2017 superintendent claim could not be corroborated in Mercury News, San José Spotlight, or district sources worked, and is labeled unproven above); GoodParty's Orchard pages (candidate list; Karl Jacobson's current trusteeship). No campaign site, Vote411 statement, or local-news profile was found for Phillips, Kasolas-Jacobson, Tang, or Eslao — Orchard is a two-school district and its board races drew no newsroom coverage we could find in 2026.

OUR CALL

At-large (vote for up to three) — endorse Lyseria Evelyn Phillips, Jeff Tang, and Molly Eslao. Phillips is endorsed on the only documented stance-and-backing file among the living candidates. Tang and Eslao are endorsed by elimination, and we say so openly: with Lo unable to serve, the only live alternative for the third seat is Kasolas-Jacobson, whose election would seat a spouse beside a sitting trustee — a proven structural conflict we will not endorse. Tang and Eslao are unproven; an unproven candidate is a risk, a built-in two-vote household bloc is a certainty.
