Endorses Bethel
The race
Georgia Supreme Court, Bethel seat, was decided in the nonpartisan election of May 19, 2026: incumbent Charlie Bethel defeated Miracle Rankin, 51.1% to 48.9% — the closest Georgia Supreme Court race of the cycle. Georgia judicial races are nonpartisan by law; alignment is inferred from appointing governors, prior offices, and endorsers, and we disclose that basis throughout.
Charlie Bethel — Incumbent. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2018 by Republican Governor Nathan Deal after a year on the Court of Appeals; before that a Republican state senator (2011–2016) and Dalton city councilman. His campaign stated his philosophy verbatim: judges "must set aside their personal preferences in deciding each case before them and… must follow the law, even when the outcome may be unpopular." He voted in 2024 with the majority that reinstated Georgia's six-week abortion law (the LIFE Act) — the ruling the challengers campaigned against. He was backed by Governor Brian Kemp and endorsed by CatholicVote.
Miracle Rankin — Challenger. Atlanta personal-injury attorney (Spelman College; University of Georgia law, 2009), partner at Morgan & Morgan since 2022 after defense work for Fortune 500 insurers at The CP Law Group; 40th president of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys. She is a Democrat, ran with the Democratic Party of Georgia's support in what the party chair called its biggest judicial-race spend in 20 years, and launched her campaign alongside reproductive- and voting-rights advocates pledging to defend civil liberties she said are "being stripped away."
Pros and cons
Bethel: Credits: Eight years on the high court plus appellate and legislative service; a stated follow-the-law philosophy; a proven vote sustaining the legislature's pro-life law against constitutional attack — restraint in action. Dirt/limits: No ethics file surfaced; the honest limit is that his pre-bench career was partisan politics, which opponents priced as "politician in robes" — a characterization, not a documented act of judging. Rankin: Credits: A serious trial practice on both defense and plaintiff sides and bar leadership. Dirt/limits: Never a judge; her campaign was an explicit referendum on overturning the court's abortion ruling — results-first judging, run with the state Democratic Party and abortion-industry endorsements (Planned Parenthood Votes, Reproductive Freedom for All).
OUR CALL
Our call: endorse Charlie Bethel. Inference basis disclosed: Deal appointee, former Republican senator, Kemp-backed, with a bench vote for judicial restraint on the LIFE Act — against a Democratic-backed challenger campaigning to change that outcome. Under our doctrine, proven restraint beats a pledge to reverse.
Vote Charlie Bethel.
