Our call — vote NO

The measure

This is a citizen-initiated law. It creates a Nature for All Fund for natural resource conservation — protecting drinking water, rivers, farms and forests, and creating or improving parks and trails — governed under rules set by a 15-member board and subject to legislative appropriation. The fund would receive 50% of state taxes collected from the sale and use of sporting goods, recreational vehicles and golf courses in its first year, rising to 100% of those taxes after July 1, 2028. No new tax is created; existing revenue is redirected.

What YES does

A YES vote dedicates that stream of existing sales tax revenue to the conservation fund.

What NO does

A NO vote leaves the revenue in the general stream, allocated annually by the Legislature among all priorities.

The math

Estimates published in the coverage cited below put the redirected revenue at roughly $60 million a year on the Department of Revenue's figure, up to $100 million a year on the supporting coalition's estimate. Implementation costs and diversion from other programs are noted in the official materials; the tax itself does not change.

OUR CALL

Our call: NO.

Earmarking is how budgets stop being budgets. This measure takes a permanent slice of existing revenue out of annual appropriation — where conservation competes honestly against schools, roads and health care — and locks it to one purpose under its own board, forever, regardless of need in any given year. Fund conservation through the budget, where voters can see the trade. NO.
