Our call — vote NO

The measure

This is a citizen-initiated law. It repeals the laws that legalize, regulate and tax retail sales of recreational marijuana — approved by Massachusetts voters in 2016 — and repeals the personal home cultivation those laws allow. Adults 21 and older could still possess up to one ounce; medical marijuana remains legal; currently licensed recreational businesses could apply on an expedited basis to convert to medical dispensaries; and the Cannabis Control Commission would regulate only the medical market. It takes effect January 1, 2028.

What YES does

A YES vote ends legal recreational retail sales and home cultivation statewide, while keeping possession of up to an ounce and the medical program legal.

What NO does

A NO vote keeps the regulated, taxed recreational market voters approved in 2016.

The math

The fiscal statement from the Executive Office of Administration and Finance, as reported in the coverage cited below, puts the revenue at stake at approximately $280 million in state revenue and approximately $50 million in local revenue in fiscal 2025 — taxes that repeal would end.

OUR CALL

Our call: no call.

Our rubric prices taxes, rights, election integrity, life, family and mandates; it does not carry a marijuana rule, and we will not invent one at the deadline. What we can print is the trade, plainly: repeal ends a legal market and roughly $330 million a year in combined revenue while keeping possession legal — which points demand toward an unregulated one — against the public-health and impaired-driving concerns the repeal campaign raises. Both sides of that trade are stated above. No call.
