Our verdict

LiberalMind endorses Gary Palmer

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and voting is already underway in Alabama. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show.

The setup

Alabama's 6th District is held by Rep. Gary Palmer (R). Because the district was in the map-litigation set, his binding nomination is the August 11 special primary, which he won with 87.0% — the May primary was nullified when the map changed (Wikipedia, "2026 United States House of Representatives elections in Alabama"; USA TODAY/AP). One correction that matters: the Democratic nominee is Maurice Mercer, who won the August 11 special Democratic primary with 64.2%. Keith Pilkington, the nominee under the nullified May result, ran again in August and finished third — he is not on the November ballot. Cook PVI is R+17 and the 2024 presidential vote was Trump 66.8%, Harris 32.1% (Cook via Ballotpedia; The Downballot via Ballotpedia). Two names are on the ballot.

Rep. Gary Palmer (Republican)

The record: Palmer has been in the House since January 2015, first elected in 2014 — before Congress he was president of the Alabama Policy Institute for 24 years (his House biography). He serves on Oversight and Government Reform and on Energy and Commerce, where he chairs the Environment Subcommittee, and he formerly chaired the House Republican Policy Committee. One documented fact, printed as fact and nothing more: on January 6, 2021, Palmer voted not to accept electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania (Bhamwiki). He was re-elected with 70.3% in 2024.

Pros: A policy-career conservative — he ran a conservative policy institute for two decades before holding office — with senior committee posts. Cons: Seeking a seventh term; our file holds no sourced failure in his service. The flaw, plainly: none in the sourced record; the January 6 vote is a documented fact of his record, and under our standing rule it is printed as fact, never priced as a disqualifier.

Maurice Mercer (Democratic)

The record: Mercer is a former Pelham City Council president — the first African American member of the Pelham City Council, where he served 13 years (Montgomery Advertiser, Aug. 11, 2026). He won the four-candidate special Democratic primary with 64.2% over Ashtyn Kennedy, Keith Pilkington, and Jacob Bouma-Sims, and raised $30,339 through September 30, 2026 (FEC, via The Green Papers).

Pros: Thirteen years of actual municipal service, including leading a city council — a real record, not a résumé line. Cons: The service is local and its documented content in our file is thin; nothing in it documents a break toward our values, and he runs as his party's nominee in an R+17 district. The flaw, plainly: a genuine but local record with no exception case in it.

OUR CALL

LiberalMind endorses Gary Palmer.

A proven conservative incumbent with senior committee standing against a challenger whose service, while real, is municipal and carries no documented exception. The House organizing vote still counts even priced at House weight, and Palmer's record is the aligned one.
