LiberalMind endorses Te Mayonna Brown — as unproven, and on watch
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and early voting is underway in Florida. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.
The setup
Florida's 24th District, in Miami-Dade, is open by retirement: Rep. Frederica Wilson (D), who has represented the district since 2011, is not seeking re-election (Inside Elections). The seat is contested on Florida's new 2026 lines (map HB 1-D, passed April 29, signed May 4; a judge ruled May 26 that the map stays for 2026) — lines that made it more Democratic still: the 2024 presidential vote here was D+38.7 on the new lines, against D+30.1 on the old (Elections Intelligence), and Kamala Harris took 69%. Inside Elections rates it Solid Democratic.
The Democratic nominee is Oliver Gilbert III, a Miami-Dade County commissioner endorsed by the outgoing congresswoman, who won the primary narrowly over state Sen. Shevrin Jones, with Kendrick Meek Jr. third and Dr. Rudolph Moise fourth — against millions of dollars in crypto-industry negative advertising aimed at the field (Inside Elections). The Republican nominee is Te Mayonna Brown — printed that way on Florida Right to Life's general-election list; Wikipedia's roster lists her as "Mayonna Te Brown." Same person; the name order is a conflict in the sources, printed rather than resolved, to be confirmed on the Division of Elections ballot. Andy Daro is on the ballot as an independent/NPA candidate.
Oliver Gilbert (Democratic)
The record: Gilbert is a sitting Miami-Dade County commissioner — proven in elected office at the county level — carrying the outgoing congresswoman's endorsement and a primary win earned in the cycle's most expensively attacked Democratic primary in South Florida. In his service, our research located no documented break with his party toward our values.
Pros: A real record in the district's own county government; the incumbent's chosen successor; a nomination that survived millions in outside negative spending, which is its own kind of primary credential.
Cons: The record is county-level and party-line, with no Manchin-test material in it; and the crypto industry's millions were spent against this field for reasons its spenders presumably had — the file does not establish what those reasons were, and we do not speculate.
The flaw, plainly: Gilbert's flaw is the caucus. His county record earns him a serious writeup; the exception is earned by breaks toward our values, and none is documented.
Te Mayonna Brown (Republican)
The record: Brown is the Republican nominee (name order as discussed above — "Te Mayonna Brown" on the FRTL general list, "Mayonna Te Brown" in Wikipedia's roster). Beyond the nomination, no record was located at compilation strength.
Pros: The conservative direction, offered in a D+38.7 district.
Cons: An empty file, on the most Democratic ground in this Florida set.
The flaw, plainly: Brown is unproven, in the nominal form — a direction on a ballot.
Andy Daro (Independent)
Daro appears in the ballot records as an NPA filer. No record was located beyond the filing. A ballot presence, printed as such.
OUR CALL
LiberalMind endorses Te Mayonna Brown — as unproven, and on watch.
Gilbert will win this seat, overwhelmingly. The endorsement answers the voter's question: a party-line county commissioner with the retiring incumbent's blessing and no documented break toward our values does not earn the exception, and the aligned challenger takes the call with her thin file, the name-order conflict in her own listing, and the district's baseline all printed at full size.
