LiberalMind endorses John Cowan — as unproven, and on watch
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and voting is already underway in Georgia. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.
The setup
Georgia's 11th District — the northwest Atlanta suburbs — is open by retirement. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R), first elected in 2014, announced in February 2026 that he would not seek a seventh term. He last won the seat with 65.6%. The district sits at PVI R+12, and Cook rates the race Solid Republican.
The Republican nominee is John Cowan, a Rome neurosurgeon. One source — the Savannah Morning News voter guide — prints his first name as "Josh." Every other source consulted (Wikipedia, East Cobb News, the GA Files, Cook Political Report, the AJC, and the Almanac of American Politics) says John Cowan. We print John, on the overwhelming weight of sourcing, and we print the conflict rather than hide it; it will be closed against the Secretary of State's certified list. The Democratic nominee is Chris Harden.
John Cowan (Republican)
The record: Cowan is a practicing neurosurgeon in Rome. He has run for Congress before: in 2020 he was the main challenger to Marjorie Taylor Greene in the GA-14 Republican primary. This time he won the June 16, 2026 runoff with more than 65% over Rob Adkerson, Loudermilk's chief of staff, after PSC Commissioner Tricia Pridemore finished third in the May primary. His campaign is largely self-financed — about a $1.75 million personal loan out of $2.35 million raised through June 30.
Pros: A professional record outside politics; a nomination earned through a primary and a runoff against the incumbent's own chief of staff — the party's voters chose the outsider over the succession plan; the conservative direction in an R+12 district.
Cons: He has never held elected office, and a self-financed campaign proves wealth and will, not a governing record. The 2020 run shows ambition for this office predates any service in it.
The flaw, plainly: Cowan is unproven — a watch-closely posture, never a demerit. Voters are buying a biography and a direction.
Chris Harden (Democratic)
The record: Harden (Christopher Matthew Harden in filer records) is the Democratic nominee. No further record was located at compilation strength.
Pros: The nomination itself, in a district his party does not expect to win.
Cons: An empty file carrying the opposing party's program, with no documented break toward our values.
The flaw, plainly: Harden's flaw is the caucus, attached to a record the sources do not contain.
