← Election Series · All house races

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and voting is underway in Illinois. This is the whole race — the records, the claims, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.

The setup OPEN SEAT. Democrat Chuy García, in the House since 2019 and last elected with 67.5% in 2024, is retiring. The compilation's verified sequence: García initially filed for another term, then withdrew his nomination AFTER the filing deadline had passed, leaving his chief of staff as the only candidate on the Democratic primary ballot; he cited health reasons after consulting his doctor and his wife. A House motion of disapproval of the maneuver, introduced by Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, passed 238–186, with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries urging opposition; commentator David Axelrod called it Chicago-style "machine tactics." Cook rates this Solid D (Feb. 6, 2025), with Inside Elections Solid D, Sabato Safe D, and Decision Desk HQ Safe D. The district covers southwest Chicago and western suburbs including Cicero and Berwyn. Also on the roster in the compilation's results table: Ed Hershey (Working Class Party), a high school teacher and the WCP nominee in 2022 and 2024, and Chris Getty (I), mayor of Lyons, a registered Democrat running as an independent — the only protest independent to make the ballot, per the compilation. ROSTER CONFLICT — UNRESOLVED: Independent Lindsay Church, a nonprofit executive, is listed in one compilation section under "failed to qualify," yet carried in the general-election results table and in a July 31–Aug. 1, 2026 general-election poll's field (Independent Center Voice: Garcia 34%, Castillo 15%, Getty 9%, Hershey 4%, undecided 37%). Printed exactly as a conflict; only the Illinois State Board of Elections list resolves it. Mayra Macías and Chicago Alder Byron Sigcho-Lopez are both marked disqualified in the compilation and are NOT counted as nominees. This file rests at compilation strength, not a direct certified-list read.

Patty Garcia (D) The record: Chief of staff to Rep. Chuy García — no relation to the incumbent, the compilation states explicitly. Ran unopposed in the Democratic primary (52,616 votes, 100%) as the sole candidate left by the withdrawal sequence above. Endorsed by García, Rep. Delia Ramirez, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, the Chicago Federation of Labor, Illinois AFL-CIO and, post-primary, the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC. FEC (Apr. 25, 2026): raised $270,042. No record of elected service was located in the file. Pros: Deep staff knowledge of the district and the office; labor and incumbent backing. Cons: She reached the general election without facing a contested primary, as the direct beneficiary of a succession maneuver the full House voted 238–186 to disapprove; endorsed post-primary by the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, with no documented break from that wing. The flaw, plainly: A proven process flaw — an uncontested path arranged by withdrawal after the filing deadline — priced as documented conduct, distinct from any policy claim.

Lupe Castillo (R) The record: Pharmacy technician; the Republican candidate for this district in 2024. Ran unopposed in the Republican primary (8,336 votes, 100%). FEC: $0 raised. No record of service in Congress was located in the file. Pros: In-tent Republican alternative; stood for this seat before and stayed in the race. Cons: No fundraising and no officeholding record on this file. The flaw, plainly: Unproven — a watch-closely posture, not a demerit.

OUR CALL LiberalMind endorses Lupe Castillo — as unproven in Congress, and on watch. Garcia's flaw is not rhetoric: the succession sequence and the 238–186 disapproval vote are documented in the file, and she offers no Manchin-test break to offset a Democratic organizing vote. Castillo is unproven, priced as such. Between a machine-arranged succession and an unproven challenger, we take the unproven challenger.
