LiberalMind endorses Michael Bouchard Jr
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and early voting is underway in Michigan. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.
The setup
Michigan's 10th District — Macomb County's Warren and Sterling Heights, plus a slice of eastern Oakland County — is an open seat. Republican Rep. John James, re-elected in 2024 with only 51.1%, is not seeking re-election; he won the Republican primary for governor on August 4. Five candidates are on the ballot: Republican Michael Bouchard Jr., Democrat Christina Bertrand Hines, Libertarian Mike Saliba, Green Kwabena Nkromo, and Working Class Party's Andrea L. Kirby (Wikipedia; MLC general-election overview).
Trump won this district by 6 points in 2024, yet James never held it by more than about two — and with him gone, the expert field disagrees with itself in both directions, which we print rather than average. Cook: Toss Up (Aug 25, moved from Lean R). Sabato's Crystal Ball: Toss-up (May 26). Inside Elections: Tilt Republican (May 21) — the oldest rating in the race by months, set before either primary, and the only R-leaning one. The three most recent dated ratings lean the other way: Decision Desk HQ at Lean D (Oct 20, the newest rating in the race), Silver Bulletin at Lean D (Aug 15), The Economist at Likely D. PollingSource's header PVI is R+8, which conflicts with Trump's actual +6 — we print Trump's +6 and flag the R+8 as a header figure we do not use.
The polling is thin and one-sided, and its sponsors are the story: PollingSource's average (Hines +1.0) rests on exactly two polls, both Democratic-sponsored — Global Strategy Group (D), Aug 10–13, Hines 45, Bouchard 45; and Public Policy Polling (D), from January, before either candidate was nominated, Hines 44, Bouchard 42. No post-primary independent or Republican-sponsored poll was located. The money: FEC figures through Oct 14 show Hines outraising Bouchard, $4.16 million to $2.88 million, but Bouchard holds more cash — $1.57 million to her $1.01 million — because she spent $3.15 million winning a contested primary while he cruised through his with 72.2%. Outside groups have spent $10.09 million, the bulk of it opposing (PollingSource).
Michael Bouchard Jr. (Republican)
The man and his record: Bouchard is an Army National Guard captain from Rochester Hills. Newsmax's account (Oct 24) describes service on a joint task force fighting ISIS and a Bronze Star; other coverage describes him as an Iraq War veteran (Ellis Insight). Those framings are not interchangeable, the Bronze Star detail reaches us through a friendly outlet, and we print the service itself as documented and the decoration as reported-not-independently-verified. He is the son of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, in office since 1999 — the name-recognition engine of the campaign, stated plainly because every source states it. He is endorsed by his father, by Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, and by President Trump. His primary-night statement is his mission in his own words: "I've worn the uniform of our nation and faced America's enemies abroad. Now the job is here at home: rebuild Michigan manufacturing, keep our families safe, and put this district first" (Detroit Free Press). With DDHQ moving the race to Lean D on Oct 20, he dismissed the forecast on Oct 24: "We're going to win… I'm not really paying attention to what they're seeing" (Newsmax).
Pros: A clean file — no scandal or verification failure located in the sourced record; a military record; establishment backing across the district's law-enforcement leadership; a 72.2% primary win that left him with the cash advantage entering the close.
Cons: He has never held elected office, and the name on the ballot is his father's before it is his. His own elected record is empty by definition. The campaign's public record is thin — a primary statement, an ad, a dismissal of the forecasters.
The flaw, plainly: Bouchard is unproven — a watch-closely posture, never a demerit. His specific version of it is inheritance: voters are asked to extend a 27-year family franchise to a son whose own file is a uniform and a platform. Both are real. Neither is a record in office.
Christina Bertrand Hines (Democratic)
The woman and her record: Hines is a Warren attorney who worked about a decade in the Washtenaw and Wayne County prosecutors' offices, including as a special victims prosecutor (WCMU, Sept 28; Michigan Advance). She is unproven as an officeholder but proven as a candidate — the hard way: she ran for Macomb County prosecutor in 2024 and lost to Republican Pete Lucido, in the district's core county. (Lucido now endorses her opponent.) She won her primary with 47.0% in a three-way field, carries former Rep. Carl Marlinga's endorsement — the Democrats' 2022 and 2024 nominee here — and is on the DCCC's Red to Blue program with the Detroit Free Press's general-election endorsement. Her rationale, in her own words: "I just really think that both parties have left working families behind… People are really really struggling all over our district" (WCMU). Her reported issues: lowering health-care costs, guarding voting rights, protecting reproductive freedom.
The attack file, at its exact strength: Bouchard's campaign attacks her Jane Fonda Climate PAC endorsement — which the PAC's own list confirms — and characterizes her as wanting "Congress to choose your health care" (via Newsmax, a friendly outlet). The endorsement is verifiable; the health-care characterization is his campaign's, printed as such.
Pros: A decade of prosecution, including special-victims work, is a real professional record in the district's own courts; she has been through a countywide race and knows its electorate; serious fundraising and national-party backing.
Cons: The one time this district's core county voted on her, it chose the Republican — a documented electoral fact, not an insult. Her program is her party's program — health care, voting rights, reproductive freedom — with no documented break toward our values, because she has never held an office in which to make one, and her endorsements (a climate PAC among them) point the other direction.
The flaw, plainly: Hines's flaw is the caucus, compounded by a lost race: she is an unproven officeholder carrying the party program, asking a Trump +6 district that already rejected her once for a lesser office to send her to Congress instead.
The minor candidates
Saliba (Libertarian), Nkromo (Green — described by MLC only as a "grassroots civic leader"), and Kirby (Working Class) are on the ballot. No further sourced record for any of the three was located; we print their presence and nothing invented on top of it.
OUR CALL
LiberalMind endorses Michael Bouchard Jr. — as unproven, and on watch.
Two unproven candidates, and the doctrine breaks the tie on direction: his platform is the conservative platform (manufacturing, public safety, district first) backed by the district's law-enforcement leadership; hers is the Democratic program with a climate-PAC endorsement in the file. Her prosecutorial decade is real and gets its weight — it is a professional record, not a governing one, and the only electorate that has judged her chose her opponent's endorser. The rater field genuinely splits — the newest forecast says Lean D, the stalest says Tilt R, and the only polls are Democratic internals-adjacent — so we say plainly: this endorsement is a direction call in a true toss-up, not a prediction.
