Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and voting is underway in Michigan. This is the whole race — the records, the claims, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.
The setup OPEN SEAT. Incumbent Haley Stevens (D) did not run for re-election to the House; she ran for the U.S. Senate and lost the August 4, 2026 Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed (Wikipedia Senate page; Detroit Free Press). Cook rates the race Solid D (per Detroit Free Press, Aug. 2026), while a PollingSource compilation lists the district PVI as D+5 — the rating and the PVI sit in tension, and both are printed as sourced. Stevens won the seat with 58.2% in 2024. Also on the ballot: Libertarian Farid Ishac and Green Ryan Teasdale, for whom no record was located beyond the ballot listing, and independent Anil Kumar, a Wayne State University board member who first filed as a Democrat in Nov. 2025, ended that campaign in Dec. 2025, and re-filed as unaffiliated in March 2026 (per The Green Papers); Kumar raised $724,355 through Sept. 30, 2026 — more than the Republican nominee. Jeremy Moss raised $1,832,672; Ethan Baker raised $178,596.
Jeremy Moss (Democratic) The record: Michigan state senator since 2019 and President Pro Tempore of the Michigan Senate; chairs the Senate Elections and Ethics Committee; previously two terms in the Michigan House and on the Southfield City Council (2011–2015); won the Democratic primary against Aisha Farooqi, John Paul Torres, and Don Ufford — the final reported share was 49.5%, though early reporting put him at about 41%, a conflict printed here rather than resolved (the nominee is undisputed); raised $1,832,672 through Sept. 30, 2026. Pros: A proven state legislator with senior leadership in Lansing and by far the largest campaign fund in the race. Cons: The file locates no break with his party toward our values in his state service — the Manchin test is proven breaks in service, and none is documented here. The flaw, plainly: His flaw is a Democratic caucus vote with no exception file, in an open seat where voters are choosing direction, not defending an incumbent.
Ethan Baker (Republican) The record: Mayor of Troy since 2019 (city council from 2015); attorney specializing in estate planning, business, and real estate law; ran unopposed in the Republican primary; raised $178,596 through Sept. 30, 2026. Pros: A proven local officeholder — a decade of elected service in the district's own communities, including six years as mayor — and a practicing attorney. Cons: His congressional record does not exist yet, his money trails Moss's by ten to one, and independent Kumar has outraised him. The flaw, plainly: His flaw is reach, not record: a proven mayor asking a Solid D-rated district to send its first Republican in this seat's current form, on a small fund. That is a campaign problem, not a failure of conduct or values.
OUR CALL LiberalMind endorses Ethan Baker.
Both nominees have real records, and we examined both. Moss's Lansing record, as documented here, contains no proven break toward our values, so he does not earn the Democratic exception. Baker's record is local and proven — mayor of Troy since 2019 — and aligned. In an open seat, direction decides: endorse Baker, and note Kumar's independent candidacy and $724,355 fund as the race's wild card, printed above.
