Our verdict

LiberalMind endorses Barbara Kahl — as unproven, and on watch

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026; Oregon votes by mail, and ballots are in voters' hands. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.

The setup

Oregon's 1st District, northwestern Oregon and the western Portland metro, is held by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D) — on the ballot as Democratic; also Working Families, under Oregon's fusion-nomination system. She was first elected in a January 31, 2012 special election after Rep. David Wu resigned, and was re-elected in 2024 with 68.6%. The district voted Harris 66.7% / Trump 29.2% in 2024, and Cook rates it Solid D. The Republican nominee is Barbara Kahl.

Suzanne Bonamici (Democratic)

The record: Bonamici is an attorney who served six years in the Oregon Legislature before Congress. In the House she co-chairs the Apprenticeship Caucus and the Career and Technical Education Caucus, co-sponsored the PRO Act, and carries a 97% lifetime AFL-CIO score (union guide — an advocacy source, at compilation strength). No documented break with her party toward our values appears in the file.

Pros: Fourteen years of incumbency and a workforce-training portfolio that is genuinely hers.

Cons: Her record is her party's labor program — the PRO Act she co-sponsored is that program in bill form — and the Working Families fusion line on her ballot states the alignment plainly.

The flaw, plainly: Bonamici's flaw is the program, with seniority: an entrenched incumbent whose located record contains no exception-earning break.

Barbara Kahl (Republican)

The record: Kahl is a Gaston-based veterinarian. She won the Republican primary with 71.5%. Her fundraising is minimal — roughly $1,191 through the May FEC reports, roughly $17,728 total in later lines. No prior elected office was located.

Pros: The conservative direction and a professional's biography, in a district where that is what a Republican nominee can offer.

Cons: A campaign funded at four figures against a fourteen-year incumbent is a candidacy, not a contest.

The flaw, plainly: Kahl is unproven — a veterinarian with a nomination and almost no campaign behind it.

OUR CALL

LiberalMind endorses Barbara Kahl — as unproven, and on watch.

Bonamici's long record holds no documented break toward our values, so the exception is not earned, and the aligned nominee takes the call with her threadbare campaign stated plainly.
