LiberalMind endorses Jon Bonck — as unproven, and on watch
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and voting is already underway in Texas. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.
The setup
Texas's 38th District — northwest Harris County (Cypress, Tomball, Jersey Village) — is an OPEN SEAT. Wesley Hunt (R) ran for U.S. Senate and did not win the nomination — it went to Ken Paxton; Hunt finished third in the Senate primary. He is on no House ballot in November. Three names are on the ballot: Jon Bonck (R), who won the Republican runoff after advancing with 46.8%; Melissa McDonough (D); and Alex McMenemy (Green). Also on the ballot, in one line: Alex McMenemy (Green) is a Tomball candidate who studied accounting and theatre and is a musician and cyclist advocate, per his campaign biography in the research file. On the new lines, the district voted Trump +20.9 (Trump 59.5–38.6), and the race is rated Solid/Safe R.
Jon Bonck (Republican)
The record: Bonck's biography below is campaign biography, as labeled in the research file. He is a mortgage and real-estate professional in greater Houston with 20+ years helping families with homeownership. He is a deacon and Bible-study teacher at Second Baptist Church. He won the Republican runoff after advancing with 46.8%.
Pros: The conservative direction in a Trump +20.9 district, two decades of work in homeownership — the central economic fact of a suburban district — and a runoff nomination won at the ballot box.
Cons: There is no elected-office record to check — no votes, no office, no budget. Every position is a campaign representation.
The flaw, plainly: Bonck is unproven — a watch-closely posture under our rules, never a demerit. Voters are buying a direction and a biography; both get audited against a first term.
Melissa McDonough (Democratic)
The record: McDonough's biography below is campaign biography, as labeled in the research file. She has spent nearly 30 years as a Realtor, including 20 years owning and managing a real-estate brokerage overseeing 45+ agents, and previously served as a national marketing director across 24 states and led the Women's Council of Realtors Houston chapter. She was also the 2024 Democratic nominee against Hunt, and lost 62.7–37.2 on the old lines.
Pros: A deep, specific professional record in the district's defining industry, experience running a brokerage of 45+ agents, and the persistence of a candidate who has run this race before and knows the district's electorate firsthand.
Cons: Her one tested general-election result in this seat is a 62.7–37.2 loss on the old lines, and the new lines are Trump +20.9. In the file consulted there is no documented break toward our values; what she offers is her party's program against that arithmetic.
The flaw, plainly: McDonough asks voters to reverse a 25-point tested result, in a district that moved no closer on the new lines, on the strength of a professional biography and her party's program. The file contains no in-service break that changes that pricing.
OUR CALL
LiberalMind endorses Jon Bonck — as unproven, and on watch.
The seat is open because Hunt's Senate bid ended third in the primary, the new lines are Trump +20.9, and the raters in the file call it Solid/Safe Republican. Bonck carries that direction with a 20-year homeownership career and a runoff actually won; McDonough carries the other party's program with a tested 62.7–37.2 loss in this seat and no documented break toward our values. Bonck's empty elected record is priced openly above: it is the reason for the watch.
