Our verdict

LiberalMind endorses Spencer Meline — as unproven, and on watch

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026; Washington votes by mail, and ballots are in voters' hands. This is the whole race — the records, the claims against each candidate, and what the sources actually show. Read the research, and decide which flaw you can live with.

The setup

Washington's 8th District crosses the Cascades from Issaquah to Wenatchee and carries the closest presidential margin of any Democratic-held district in this state set: Harris 50.9% / Trump 45.2% in 2024, Cook PVI D+3 — though Cook's race listing rates the seat Solid D. It is held by Rep. Kim Schrier (D), first elected in 2018 and seeking a fifth term. In the August 4 primary, Schrier took 53.7% and the Republican nominee, Spencer Meline, 15.8%, advancing from a multi-candidate Republican field whose second place was unresolved on election night.

Kim Schrier (Democratic)

The record: Schrier is an Issaquah pediatrician (residency at Stanford; a B.A. in astrophysics from UC Berkeley) who has served since 2019; a single-source report places her on the Energy and Commerce Committee, including its Health and Manufacturing and Trade subcommittees. No documented break with her party toward our values appears in her file.

Pros: A four-term incumbent and a physician in a district that keeps re-electing her across a partisan divide — the strongest Democratic hold in this set relative to her district's lean.

Cons: Her record is her party's program; a D+3 district has never produced a moderation file from her that our sources record, and the exception requires exactly that.

The flaw, plainly: Schrier's flaw is the caucus in a district that votes nearly even: she represents swing ground as a straight party vote, and no documented break prices her otherwise.

Spencer Meline (Republican)

The record: Meline is a Wenatchee Valley business owner from Cashmere who operates a fine-dining restaurant in Leavenworth. He has no elected experience; his formal education includes coursework at Edmonds Community College. His campaign pillars, per a candidate Q&A: small-business opportunity, housing, and wildfire prevention and forest management.

Pros: The conservative direction, an eastern-Washington base in a district half of which is Trump country, and a platform aimed at the district's actual economy — business, housing, and the forests that burn.

Cons: No elected record at any level: voters are hiring a first-time officeholder on biography and pillars.

The flaw, plainly: Meline is unproven — a restaurateur with sensible pillars and no service record to grade them against.

OUR CALL

LiberalMind endorses Spencer Meline — as unproven, and on watch.

Schrier's four terms hold no documented break toward our values, so the exception is not earned — in the one Washington district where the presidential margin says a direction vote is a live vote. The aligned challenger takes the call with his unwritten record stated plainly.
