LiberalMind endorses Dan Patrick
Election Day is November 3. Dan Patrick, lieutenant governor since 2015 and the presiding officer of the Texas Senate, seeks a fourth term against Austin Rep. Vikki Goodwin — and the two October university polls cannot agree on who is winning: Houston says Patrick, UT Austin says Goodwin. No Democrat has won a Texas statewide race since 1994. LiberalMind endorses Dan Patrick. Read the research, and see why.
How Texas got here
Texas primaries were held March 3, 2026, with May runoffs where no candidate took a majority (2026 Texas elections summary). The printed ballot, confirmed by the Austin Chamber's Nov. 3 voting guide, the USA Today Texas midterm guide, and the Greenville, TX official election page: Dan Patrick (R), incumbent; Vikki Goodwin (D); Anthony Cristo (L); Kevin McCormick (G). Certified write-ins (Arturo Espinosa, Stephen Samuelson) exist for this office per the Greenville listing — declared, not printed.
Patrick won the March 3 GOP primary with 84% (Daily Toreador). Goodwin won the Democratic nomination in the May runoff after leading the primary at about 48% against Marcos Vélez, who advanced with her (Off the Kuff primary-night summary; Texas Association of Dairymen runoff recap).
The polls — both printed, never blended, because they disagree on the leader: - University of Houston Hobby School (Oct. 10–14, 2,000 likely voters, ±2.2): Patrick 47, Goodwin 42, Cristo 3, McCormick 1 (FOX 26 report of the Hobby poll). - UT Austin / Texas Politics Project (Sept. 25–Oct. 5, 1,200 registered voters; likely-voter subsample ±3.34 on ballot items): Goodwin 49, Patrick 46, Cristo 2, McCormick 1 (KXAN; Texas Gazette) — the UT poll's own analysts caution that most down-ballot candidates are first-time statewide candidates unfamiliar to many voters. - A September Texas Public Opinion Research poll (Patrick +3) reaches this file through a prediction-market release relaying it (Kalshi / PR Newswire) — third-tier sourcing, labeled as such.
A "wide fundraising gap" favoring Patrick is reported by the Texas Capital News compilation, but no Texas Ethics Commission figures were pulled this pass — printed as a gap in the file, not a number. For scale: no Democrat has won a Texas statewide race since 1994 (USA Today guide; PR Newswire). Both the Austin Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman endorsed Goodwin (Texas Capital News compilation).
Dan Patrick (Republican) — a decade running the Senate
Background and service: Lieutenant Governor since 2015, seeking a fourth term; re-elected in 2022 with 53.75% (2026 Texas elections summary). As Senate president he is the chamber's presiding officer and the governor's chief legislative counterweight — his 2025 THC-ban feud with Gov. Abbott (SB 3, vetoed by Abbott) is documented in full in the companion governor file and is part of his record by reference: a lieutenant governor who fights his own governor on a signature bill is exercising the office's independent power, and we print it as record, not as a flaw in either man.
In the UT/TPP poll, Patrick's favorability stood at 33% favorable / 38% unfavorable (Texas Gazette).
Pros: A decade proven in the office — the most powerful lieutenant governorship in America, run by a man his party just renominated with 84%. He is a known quantity on every question the office touches.
Cons: His net favorability in the UT poll is underwater (33/38), and the UT survey — for whatever a disagreeing pair of polls is worth — puts him behind a challenger most voters cannot identify. A fourth term asks voters to extend a tenure that began in 2015.
The flaw, plainly: No flaw proven in service was located in this research. An underwater favorability split is a political fact, not a conduct finding, and we price it as the former.
Vikki Goodwin (Democratic) — the low-information challenger
Background and service: Democratic state representative from Austin (Austin Chamber guide); won her nomination through the May runoff (Off the Kuff; TAD recap).
The UT poll found her favorability at 20% with 39% holding no opinion — a low-information challenger profile against a high-recognition incumbent (Texas Gazette). Both major Austin papers endorsed her (Texas Capital News compilation). No Manchin-test break with her party on our values — Constitution, capitalism and the free market, Christianity, freedom — in service was located in this research.
Pros: She leads in one of the two October university polls (UT/TPP, 49–46) — a real, sourced fact, printed beside the poll that contradicts it. She carries both Austin papers' endorsements and survived a contested primary and runoff.
Cons: Four in ten voters in the UT survey had no opinion of her; she is asking Texas to replace a decade-proven Senate president with a state representative whose statewide record does not yet exist. No Manchin-test break was located.
The flaw, plainly: No conduct flaw was located. The priced items are an unproven statewide record — a watch posture in itself — and the doctrinal one: no proven in-service break with her party, so the exception is not earned.
The minor candidates, briefly
Anthony Cristo (Libertarian) and Kevin McCormick (Green) are confirmed on the printed ballot by the Austin Chamber guide and the Greenville official listing, polling 3% and 1% (Hobby) and 2% and 1% (UT/TPP) respectively. No further record was located for either in this research — an insufficient-record statement, printed as such.
OUR CALL
LiberalMind endorses Dan Patrick.
Patrick is proven in this exact office for a decade, renominated with 84%, and opposed by a challenger of whom 39% of polled voters have no opinion and for whom no Manchin-test break was located. The two polls disagree on the leader and we print both; disagreement about the electorate does not change the doctrine, which prices records. A proven conservative incumbent against an unproven challenger who has not earned the exception is not a close call under our criteria. Endorse Patrick.
